When the month-long reconnaissance mission is completed, as shown in Painting 45, the crew departs the MOL in their Gemini-B spacecraft, firing their separation rockets. The Gemini-B is a stripped-down version of NASA's earlier Gemini vehicle because it relied on the MOL for life support, electrical power and maneuvering capability. In fact, a contractor report indicates that it was so stripped down that it was to use large springs instead of separation rockets, to minimize the risk of failure during long flights. After it departs, the Gemini-B has just fourteen hours of loiter capability before it must splash down somewhere--anywhere.

Jacobe again shows us the aft end of the MOL, but this time he has illuminated it enough for us to see generic spherical tanks and other fixtures, none of which may correspond to reality.
